No excuses for Manchester United’s players now, they need to deliver!

The inevitable happened Tuesday morning as Manchester United deemed that Jose Mourinho’s turbulent tenure as manager should come to an end. The 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last weekend was the final straw. Even though the Red Devils will not have a permanent manager in place till next summer, there is a feeling of relief amongst supporters that the Mourinho era has now come to an end.

It is important to state that Jose Mourinho was not the only problem at Old Trafford. There are many other factors which have contributed to the shambolic season Manchester United supporters have had to endure. From the boardroom to the players, a much-needed change in attitude is needed. The next permanent Manchester United manager will be Ed Woodward’s fourth managerial appointment in his six-year regime as Chief Executive of the club.

The six-year contract given to David Moyes back in 2013 still hasn’t even expired yet, which just indicates the erratic nature of how things have been run at the club in recent years. It is important that this latest debacle serves as a line in the sand for Ed Woodward and Manchester United. A whole new restructuring is needed at boardroom level and the next managerial appointment must be the right one.

There is no doubt that the players have let themselves down on more than one occasion since Mourinho was at the helm. Some players would often hide behind the manager’s tactics and use that as an excuse for their poor performances. Now the manager has departed, these players really have no excuse. From now till the end of the season, the players in the squad need to prove that they are Manchester United players.

Some of the players in the United squad have performed well below their level. Others players in the squad are just not at the level required. It has been well documented that Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho had huge issues on the training ground and even during some games you could visibly see them arguing on the touch-line. It was the clash of the egos and in this instance, Pogba lives to fight another day while Mourinho doesn’t.

This is now the time for Pogba to step up and prove to the world he is a world-class player and not just a show pony. The Frenchman can’t blame anyone but himself if he doesn’t perform now. It would often be said that Mourinho would stifle Pogba’s game and didn’t trust him defensively. He is an infuriating player and some could see how he could get under the skin of Mourinho.
