MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho still retains the support of the club’s owners, the Glazer family, according to reports. Manchester United boss Mourinho is under pressure to turn things around at Old Trafford in the wake of their shambolic start to the season.
The Red Devils are in crisis mode with last night’s goalless draw against Valencia doing nothing to lift the doom and gloom mood around the club. Manchester United fans are growing tired of life under Mourinho, who has also overseen shambolic defeats to Brighton, Tottenham, Derby and West Ham. Zinedine Zidane remains linked to the job in the wake of his decision to leave Real Madrid back in May.
However, ESPN say the Glazer family have moved to dampen talk of Mourinho getting the sack. The report suggests that they are aware of the dire mood around the club. United fans have, by and large, backed Mourinho. After the Tottenham game - a match they were battered 3-0 - they sung his name in support. That stance, though, appears to be changing.
United fans were livid last night, jeering Mourinho and his side as they trudged off the Old Trafford turf. Despite that, though, ESPN say the Glazers are standing by their man. Back in 2014, the club only axed David Moyes after Champions League qualification became mathematically impossible. That decision was made, despite the Scot losing the support of senior figures such as Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Robin van Persie earlier in the campaign. It was a similar story with Louis van Gaal in 2016.
The Dutchman did deliver the FA Cup - the first piece of silverware of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. But he paid the price for his failure to steer them to a top four spot, with the Glazers installing Mourinho as his replacement. A win against Newcastle on Saturday is now crucial. Because the more results worsen, the less likely the Glazers will stand by Mourinho.
