What does Marouane Fellaini have left to offer Manchester United?

Marouane Fellaini has been a Manchester United player for just over five years. A strange idea considering he isn’t the most popular or technically gifted player United fans have ever seen. Fellaini earned his move away from Everton in September 2013 following good performances. The 2012/13 season saw Fellaini score 11 goals in 31 games. A good return for a central midfielder. His performances against top sides such as Arsenal, Manchester City and United themselves in that season made top clubs aware of his talent.

Fellaini’s performances were good enough to earn him player of the month in November of 2012, especially his recent goal at the Champions League against Young Boys that qualified the team to the Knock outs. Fellaini’s bullying and physical style were clearly appealing to then-United manager David Moyes who had previously signed the Belgian for Everton. Fellaini was often deployed as a number 10 or second striker being the target man to receive long balls up to him. His chest control is arguably the best in the world and although his use of elbows when challenging for aerial balls can be dangerous, it makes him a nightmare to defend against.

A good header of the ball makes him dangerous in the opponent’s box and an asset in his own. His flexibility as a midfielder also makes him a great squad player. He can play central defensive midfield, central midfield and as a central attacking midfielder. In the last 10 minutes of games, Fellaini has even gone up front as the main striker. Fellaini was signed on deadline day in September and there was excitement from United fans. He has always been known of recent as an efficient substitute player. And also one of the under-rated players in Man United.

However, this may have been because United actually made a signing, rather than being excited about the signing. In the five-plus seasons, Fellaini has been at United he has unfortunately failed to make as big an impact as fans were hoping for. His goal return for United has been less than that of what it was at Everton and he has on several occasions been made the scapegoat for poor performances and results. Often giving away fouls that lead to goals or having his weaknesses greatly exposed.
