Manchester United open contract talks with three players

Manchester United have opened talks with Juan Mata and Ander Herrera over new contracts. Mata, 30, and Herrera, 29, are out of contract in the summer and free to negotiate terms with rival clubs in the January transfer window if they enter the last six months of their existing deal. However, the MEN understands United have opened dialogue with Mata and Herrera’s representatives in an attempt to keep them at Old Trafford beyond 2019.

Ashley Young is the only other United player out of contract in June and without the option of an additional year and the club has offered the 33-year-old a one-year deal. Mata became United’s club-record signing in a £37.1million move from Chelsea in January 2014 and Herrera arrived later that year for £29m from Athletic Bilbao.

Spain internationals Mata and Herrera have started in three of United’s four cup finals since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Mata scored in the 2016 FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace and Herrera was named man of the match in the Europa League triumph over Ajax in Stockholm last year.

Herrera started in United’s last two matches against Manchester City and Juventus, whom Mata scored the equaliser against last week, and the former Chelsea playmaker has lined up in four of the last six. United are expected to exercise their one-year options on the contracts of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia, Andreas Pereira, Matteo Darmian and James Wilson to tie them to Old Trafford until 2020. David de Gea and Anthony Martial have also technically entered the last year of their terms but United have an option of an additional year on their deals and are in dialogue over long-term arrangements.

After the derby defeat to City, Young said: “A really disappointing end to a week of tough away games. We know what yesterday meant to our fans and rest assured that during the international break we’ll be doing everything to make sure it’s three points next time out at Old Trafford.”

Young generated interest from Watford, Swansea, West Ham and Everton midway through Mourinho’s first season but has cemented himself as a first-teamer over the last year at left-back and right-back. Young is currently keeping club captain Valencia on the sidelines.
